Tools & Supplies
Let's go over the supplies that will be used in this course.
NOTE: It's not necessary to go out and buy all of these supplies or tools before you start the lessons! There is no need to complete the lessons in order. Begin by working through the lessons that utlize art supplies you already have. Once you start getting a sense of the methods you enjoy and the others you might like to try, then consider making a few purchases.
Here are a few tips:
- You will need a nice selection of acrylic paints in colors that you enjoy. Cheap craft paints are perfectly fine for this course!
- I always suggest rather than buying a full set of any one supply (such as paints, watercolors, pencils, pens, sprays, inks, markers, etc.), purchase just a few items in the colors you love. Interested in pastels? Purchase 3 or 4 in your favorite colors, rather than an expensive set and you will be more likely to use them.
- I recommend watching the lessons first and then determining what supplies you have on hand that might work as a substitute. Then, if you would like to add some supplies to your tool kit, choose the lessons that look the funnest to you and start with those. Over time you will get a sense of what supplies you might really enjoy having and purchase them judiciously as you continue your art practice.
- I strongly urge you to consider purchasing a gel plate if you do not have one already. Several of the lessons in this course require a gel plate. If you really want to have fun making papers and make a lot of them in short order, a gel plate is a must. While you can make a lot of papers without one, a gel plate is an amazing and versatile tool. They come in a variety of sizes and there are endless ways to use them. If you are unsure about the expense, purchasing a smaller, less expensive one, is always an option. Alternatively, you can make your own! There are many tutorials online for how to do this.
Of special note: When I began creating this course I had the best intentions of listing each suppy on the screen right in the video as I was using it. You will see this in the first few videos. It quickly became apparent that this was incredibly time consuming when it came to editing the videos. In order for this course to see the light of day in a timely fashion I abadoned this effort. Instead, the entire supply list is included below as a printable PDF if you are interested in the colors that I used.
